The Japanese demonstrated a knack for bold strategic naval and military operations that enabled disruptive victories against a seemingly more powerful opponent, a hallmark of later conflicts. One of the few naval contests fought at close range against large-bore, short-barreled heavy guns designed to fire fast-burning but slow-loading propellant, the battle of the Yalu seemed to demonstrate the effectiveness of quick-firing breech-loaders and the 'line ahead' battle formation which became the common tactical doctrine of both protagonists in the Russo-Japanese war a decade later. |
